Have you ever attended
worship of a religion other than your own?
For example, if
you are Jewish, have you been to a Hindu temple or if you are
a Muslim have you been to a Christian service?
If you have been, did you feel you were able to pray or were
you just an observer?
If you have not been, would you go if you were invited?
Do you ever use prayers and readings from religious traditions
other than your own in your times of reflection and meditation?
Or would you describe yourself as spiritual rather than religious
- in that you do not go regularly to church or to the temple,
but that your life is shaped by spiritual values?
Underlying these questions are bigger questions about whether
the different religious paths all lead to the same goal or whether
the differences between religions are so deep as to be unbridgeable.
To explore this, we need to discover whether our spiritual experiences
are similar to those who follow another spiritual path. In this
Unit we shall learn what those who have tried to enter into
the spiritual experience of another faith tradition have discovered
and then we shall come back to more practical questions.
