network Brief Report, September 12, 2003
Mission The mission of the Peace Council is to demonstrate that peace is possible and that effective collaboration to make peace also is possible. In a world where religion too often is used to justify division, hatred, and violence, the Peace Councilors offer an alternative: the example of leaders from different religious communities working together in practical ways to relieve suffering and to make the world whole. Activities The Peace Councilors agreed at the beginning to carry on their work by helping one another. That has led to various forms of involvement in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, the struggle for justice and human rights in Chiapas, the efforts to create understanding and interaction in North Korea, various efforts to be supportive of peacemaking activities in Palestine/Israel, and, most recently, to a series of activities in Northern Ireland. These activities, once initiated, are usually continued both organizationally and individually. Other initiatives are always in process at the urging of individual Peace Councilors. At present the Peace Council is working with the Sudanese Women’s Association to relieve the suffering of at least some of the millions of refugees. Regular contact with various friends and organizations in Iraq may lead to similar alliances there. Future Possibilities Present plans call for an international conversation
of religious and women’s leaders under the topic Women, Religion,
and At its Belfast gathering, the Peace Council also appointed a committee to look specifically at possibilities for ways to bring about systemic change in various political and economical power centers of the world. It hopes to aim to enter into conversations with world leaders in these areas under the theme Spiritual Dimensions of Power.
