Good News story from Turkmenistan: Shagildy Atakov Shagildy Atakov, freed religiuus freedom prisoner in Turkmenistan

Baptist Christian Shagildy Atakov was released from prison on 8 January 2002 after serving more than three years of a four-year sentence in extremely harsh conditions. He was arrested in December 1998 on what his supporters call fabricated charges to punish him for his religious beliefs. Between February 2001 and March 2001, AI issued a series of urgent actions.

Following pressure from the international community alleging that his life was at risk after having been ill-treated and inappropriately administered psychotropic drugs, in mid-February 2001 Shagildy Atakov was transferred from the Seydi labour camp to a prison hospital in the town of Mary.
